Job Description

Under general supervision and procedural control from the Aquatics Superintendent, the Pool Manager exercises administrative and supervisory direction of all daily operation of his/her assigned pool. The Manager should have a "public health" point of view, observing and studying all phases of the pool operation, with an eye toward maintaining high health and safety standards. Employee prepares recurring reports and records, which are sometimes technical. Decisions are made daily on a variety of items ranging from simple to complex. Employee provides continuous service to the public which requires courtesy, tact, and diplomacy and has full responsibility for directing, assisting and evaluating job performance of all guards assigned to his/her assigned pool.

Job Responsibilities

1. Assists in the preparation, distribution and enforcement of all rules and regulations contained in the City of McAllen Municipal Pools Operation Manual and/or any other rules, laws of ordinances pertinent to the operation.
2. Supervises the lifeguards, cashiers, baby pool guards, instructors, and any other personnel assigned to him/her by the Parks & Recreation Department.
3. Oversees and assists pool operators and maintenance personnel as necessary to help maintain the pool in a safe and sanitary condition.
4. Assists in recruitment, selection and scheduling of all pool personnel.
5. Serves as the primary administrator of emergency services in case of accidents.
6. Exercises diligence and prudence in maintaining maximum safety for all guests as well as staff.
7. Assists in developing and conducting in-service training programs for the staff and help establish emergency operation procedures.
8. Serves as the primary administrator in handling all grievances of staff members as well as grievances and/or discipline cases involving guests of the pool.
9. Evaluates and records staff member's daily performance and attendance.
10. Closely supervises all records and reports required by the Parks & Recreation Department, as well as tabulates all daily receipts and delivers them where specified by supervisor.
11. Responsible for the operating change issued at the beginning of the season
12. Keeps daily inventory of all emergency equipment and office supplies and reports any items needed for daily operation to the Aquatic Superintendent.
13. Uses sound judgment in determining use of the pool in cases of bad weather. The manager may close the pool for the day if lightning or severe weather is in the vicinity.
14. Assists the Superintendent of Aquatics in any phase of swimming pool operation and other rlated tasks as needed.
15. Promotes good public relations on behalf of the City of McAllen wherever possible.
16. Assists in meeting overall program objectives, safety and quality.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Minimum Requirements - 1. Open to applicants 18 years of age or older.
2. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
3. Must have completion of at least (1) semester (12 hrs. minimum) of college credit.
4. Must present certificate and have current certification in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, current
American Red Cross Standard First Aid – with a minimum of two (2) years in aquatics leadership position such as a lifeguard, swim instructor, coach, etc.
5. Must be knowledgeable and capable of properly using cash register, safety whistle, swim suit and various office equipment associated with the operation of swimming pools.
6. Must be in good or excellent physical condition, mobile and agile.
7. Must be alert, active, responsible and mature individual.
8. Must exhibit special leadership qualities and ability to work with superiors as well as subordinates.
9. Must be able to promote good public relations for the city.
10. Must be able to meet the public in a courteous manner, using tact and diplomacy.

Physical Requirements

Employee works outdoors with unusual hours or shifts and is on call (waiting to be engaged to work) when not on duty. Work involves sitting, standing and swimming and demands physical strength and agility normally associated with superior swimming. Employee is exposed to hazards which might result in burning of the skin. Work involves normal weather changes.

Additional Information

1. This is a safety sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing.
2. This position has supervisory responsibilities.
3. This is a part-time seasonal position. The length of employment will be determined by the program's success in
attracting participants and providing services. If the program fails to enroll enough participants to justify cost, the
program, at that individual site, will be cancelled, and those personnel terminated or reassigned to another location.
